International soprano Lydia Caruana is this year’s Bailey’s Woman of the Year.

The annual award, organised by M. Demajo (Wines and Spirits) Ltd, this year was held in the Barrakka Gardens.

The nominees for this year included swimmer Angela Galea, TV presenter Moira Delia and entrepreneur and media personality Mariella Scerri.

A visibly-moved Lydia Caruana said on receiving the award that she felt more anxious than at a concert. Ms Caruana has sung with international greats Andrea Bocelli and José Carreras. She recently released her own CD together with celebrity Paul Gulda. She has performed at the International Opera Gala Series in Ireland and has sung in Bologna, Arezzo, Vienna, Ingolstad, Edinburgh, Washington, Toronto, and a 16-concert tour in Germany.

The Bailey’s Woman of the Year Award was set up by M. Demajo (Wines and Spirits) Ltd to honour Malta’s outstanding women.

The event was hosted by presenter Charles Saliba and William Mangion entertained the guests with a selection of songs much to the appreciation of all present.

The award was presented by Anthony Miceli Demajo, managing director of M. Demajo (Wines and Spirits) Ltd who thanked all those involved for their meticulous work and attention to detail.

Lydia Caruana chose to donate the cash prize to Dar tal-Providenza and to an animal refuge centre.
